A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, causing widespread destruction. Buildings, a bridge, and a dam collapsed, leaving many dead and injured. The earthquake struck at midday, with its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. It was followed by a strong 6.4 magnitude aftershock.

Myanmar Faces Heavy Losses

Myanmar suffered the most damage, with at least 144 people killed and over 730 injured, according to Myanmar’s military leader Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing in a televised speech. The hardest-hit cities showed extensive destruction, with homes, businesses, and infrastructure severely damaged. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Impact in Thailand

In Thailand, at least eight people died in Bangkok when a high-rise building under construction collapsed due to the quake. Other buildings in the city also suffered structural damage, prompting emergency responses.

Challenges in Assessing the Damage

Myanmar, one of the world’s poorest countries, is currently facing a civil war, making it difficult to get clear information on the full extent of casualties and destruction. Communication and rescue efforts are being hampered by the conflict and poor infrastructure.

Authorities in both countries are working to assess the situation and provide aid to those affected. However, with aftershocks continuing, the risk of further damage remains high.
